Gavin Flannery

Bellway site manager Gavin Flannery, from Westhoughton, has been crowned a winner of the much sought-after Seal of Excellence award from the National House Building Council (NHBC).

Part of the prestigious NHBC Pride in the Job awards, the Seal of Excellence is a regional competition at which just a few site managers from across the North West are recognised and rewarded this much coveted accolade.

Gavin, who has worked for Bellway Manchester for almost four years, is based at The Vistas, a charming development of three and four bedroom homes on Collingwood Way in Westhoughton, just a stone’s throw from his home.

This Seal of Excellence award is particularly poignant as Gavin underwent brain surgery in 2019 and required many months off work in 2020 to recover.  His return to work and success in both the Pride in the Job and Seal of Excellence awards in 2021 is an incredible achievement.

Gavin says: “I am over the moon.  I didn’t expect to receive a Seal of Excellence award this year as I had so much time off to recover from brain surgery, but it really is fantastic news.  I was so emotional on the night and am very proud.”

Judging for the Seal of Excellence award is a comprehensive and intensive process that covers all aspects of the build process including quality of workmanship, technical expertise, leadership and health and safety, and only a handful of site managers have what it takes to achieve the high standards that the NHBC inspectors are looking for.

Demonstrating consistent quality across all areas of build and day-to-day site management is key to achieving success, with Gavin and his team subject to regular visits from the NHBC inspecting team over a 12 month period as part of the judging process.

Construction director at Bellway Manchester, Paul Wright, commented: “We are delighted that Gavin has been awarded with a Seal of Excellence at The Vistas.  It is without doubt a remarkable achievement for him following his recovery from brain surgery, and a real team effort on site.

“For Bellway Manchester, it is the second National House Building Council (NHBC) Seal of Excellence award, with the first won in 2020 for our Heatherley Wood development in Alderley Edge, so as a division we are thrilled too!  The award recognises the huge effort and commitment continually provided by the team and it proves we are building some of the best new homes in Bolton.”

NHBC Chief Executive, Steve Wood, concludes: “Pride in the Job has been pivotal in improving the quality of new build homes for more than 40 years.  The very best site managers of 2021 have remained focused, despite the numerous challenges faced, and receiving a Seal of Excellence award is a great achievement.  It places that site manager at the top of their profession, building homes that are amongst the best the UK has to offer.”

During his career, Gavin has won the Seal of Excellence award six times, with this latest award win taking his total to seven.
