Cornish Sea Salt reports sales spike of 46% across its supermarket retailers, as gourmet salt market soars as consumers replace table salt with mineral seat salt.
2020 made home-chefs of the nation, with many consumers being more experimental then ever in the kitchen the salt company reported a huge 202% uplift in Tesco stores, with further growth in sales in Morrisons (76%), Sainsburys (22.6%) and Waitrose (31.6%).
More shoppers than ever before are upgrading to gourmet salt from ordinary table salt as the once foodie trend becomes mainstream – Cornish Sea Salt also saw a 22.6% uplift in ASDA stores.
In convenience the brand also saw growth, with sales in Co-Op up by more than a third.
In early 2020 the demand for gourmet sea salt among every day shoppers began to rocket, with popularity in stronger tasting varieties growing as shoppers looked to cut down on how much salt they use with their meals.
The trend grew so quickly that Tesco stores alone now stocks eight different gourmet salt products – outnumbering ordinary table salt SKUS for the first time ever.
At the forefront of the gourmet salt revolution is Cornish Sea Salt who are based in Helston, off the Lizard peninsular.
The business launched in 2013, recent sales spikes have forced the brand to quadruple the size of its plant to meet the rising demand.
Cornish Sea Salt Company Managing Director Philip Tanswell said: “The past few years have seen a significant rise in the demand for sea salt in the UK, quadrupling output from our sea salt house in Cornwall as a result.
“Our salts are naturally lower in sodium and contain over 60 healthy minerals. They pack such a punch that you’ll get away with using 30 per cent less than other salts for the same intensity of flavour.”
