An ice rink on Slessor Gardens, Big Wheel with views of the Tay and brand-new light displays featuring much-loved characters from DC Thomson will help transform Dundee city centre into a winter wonderland this Christmas.

Christmas in Dundee promises to be a fun-packed festive period for locals and visitors alike were revealed today by Dundee City Council.

They include revamped Christmas lights which have been inspired by Dundee’s heritage. As well as the comic-book characters, there are also nods to the city’s maritime past and its status as a UNESCO City of Design.

The Winter Fest will open in Slessor Gardens on 26 November, giving people the chance to shop for crafts or enjoy food and drink from the mini village of traditional wooden hut stalls.

The Winter Fest also features a specially constructed ice rink, while the Big Wheel will transform the city’s skyline for a six-week period.

From 3rd – 24th December, Dundee’s iconic City Square will join in the fun with a 3D Dundee Christmas card for the ultimate festive selfie. Overseen by a light up Pingoo, revellers will be able to cast their Christmas wishes at the Wishing Fountains and enjoy nightly projections illuminating City Chambers.

With a selection of hot and cold refreshments also available, there will be a calendar of family-friendly events running throughout December.

Depute convener of city development Steven Rome said: “With so much going on across the city centre, Dundee is the place to be this Christmas.

“Whether you’re bringing the kids out to see the lights and get a selfie with Pingoo, or enjoying food and drinks at the Winter Fest, there’s something for all ages.

“A lot of planning has gone into making it a Christmas to remember after the challenges of the last year-and-a-half, and also ensuring that the festivities are delivered safely.
“With a programme spanning six weeks, there will be plenty of time for everyone to come down and safely enjoy the fun.

“Don’t forget too that we have a great shopping offer throughout the city centre area, including lots of quirky independent stores offering those unique Christmas gifts, and plenty of great bars and restaurants.

“I’m sure we will see people from across the country joining local folk in discovering all Dundee has to offer during this festive period.”
