The Curve and The Developer Academy back online learning event

Sheffield tech firms have marked this years’ Science Month by assisting with an online hackathon. The event, which took place last Thursday, was attended by those looking to enter the world of coding.

With the UK headed towards a significant digital skills shortage, events targeted at novice tech developers are expected to form a key cornerstone of the country’s strategy to boost interest in the sector.

Earlier this month, the Chancellor looked to curb the looming skills shortage in the annual budget, with an extension to the government’s support for retraining programmes, apprenticeships and traineeships welcomed by the tech sector.

The hackathon, which saw coders test out their skills to compete for prizes, was hosted by the BCS South Yorkshire branch.

Paul Ridgway, CEO of The Curve, said: “The event was really well attended and it was a fantastic opportunity to see the up-and-coming talent in this field.

“We had a diverse mix of attendees, including those who were trying to get back into the world of tech development after following a different career path, as well as younger individuals just starting out in their career.

“It was a brilliant event to be involved with, and I look forward to working on similar ones in the future.”

Earlier this year, The Curve were named as one of Insider’s Most Exciting Companies for 2021.
