Competition winner Caspar and a Barratt representative

Local housebuilder, Barratt Homes Yorkshire East, has brought a school pupils’ competition-winning bedroom design to life at its Wigmore Park development in Grimsby, inspired by Roald Dahl’s infamous Charlie and the Chocolate Factory story.

Pupils at New Waltham Academy had previously participated in an interior design competition with Barratt Homes, in which they were tasked to design the new children’s bedroom at Wigmore Park’s latest show home, based on their favourite Roald Dahl book. After much deliberation by Barratt Homes, Caspar, aged 8 years old, was the chosen winner with his Charlie and the Chocolate Factory inspired bedroom. Caspar’s design features golden ticket bedding, candy lolly features, and further sweet-covered decorations, all of which have been carefully recreated by the interior design team at Wigmore Park.

Caspar, along with his classmates, were all invited down to the development to see his design brought to life, where they also received an engaging reading of Charlie and The Chocolate Factory by professional storyteller, Robin Simpson. To support guided reading, Barratt Homes gifted each of the pupils with a copy of the classic storybook, so that they can continue reading the story together. Guided reading is an important part of a child’s progression and allows for more focused teaching and differentiation. Studying texts and reading together enables the teacher to discuss the story in depth at a level which is appropriate to the pupils.1

What’s more, the class also received an educational site tour of the development, led by Barratt Homes’ Site Manager, where they learned about the construction of the homes and the importance of safety on site.

Mr Jazz White, class teacher at New Waltham Academy, commented: “We’re extremely grateful to Barratt Homes Yorkshire East for inviting our pupils to take part in such fun and creative activities. The pupils loved the storytelling activity as well as the educational site tour, and it was great to see them get engaged in the activity and ask lots of questions! Caspar was really pleased to see his winning design brought to life, and we look forward to continuing our guided reading session together in the classroom.”

Sarah Crawford, Sales Manager at Barratt Homes’ nearby Wigmore Park development, added: “We absolutely loved welcoming the pupils from New Waltham Academy to Wigmore Park, and showing Caspar his winning design in person. The children were really engaged in both the storytelling activity and the site tour, and it was fantastic to see them getting so involved!

“As a local housebuilder, we are really keen to support the communities in which we build, and we’d like to thank the school for visiting our development, and a special shoutout to Casper for his wonderful design. We hope that the class enjoys their new storybooks and continue to explore their love of reading and learning.”
