World famous premium sweet brand Uncle Joe’s Mint Balls has appealed for confectionery fans to help choose a new festive flavour in time for Christmas.

Bosses at the Wigan-based company have joined forces with retailer Home Bargains (operated by Liverpool-based TJ Morris) to find the ultimate taste that reminds people of Yuletide.

After an initial appeal for flavours from Uncle Joe’s Facebook followers, they have now launched a poll based on five of the suggestions, so people can vote for their favourite

  • Mulled wine
  • Christmas pudding
  • Rudolph noses (cherry)
  • Mince pie
  • Cranberry and clementine

People can vote for their favourite by going to https://www.facebook.com/UncleJoes1898/posts/5182334838459035 with mince pie flavour an early front runner after the poll was launched. Uncle Joe’s will make the most popular suggestion if enough people vote for it.

John Winnard MBE, Joint Managing Director of Wigan-based Uncle Joe’s, said: “We have had a lot of people over the years asking us to produce a festive sweet and we decided to ask all the Uncle Joe’s fans out there help us choose one.

“Our initial appeal for ideas produced some great suggestions and some that were a little bit off the wall (like Brussels sprout flavour!), but we’ve picked five that might prove to be the most popular and, depending on the response, we might end up making the one that comes out top.”

Uncle Joe’s Mint Balls are made by Wigan-based William Santus and Co Ltd, a privately-owned traditional sweet company that was established in 1898.

The ownership has been passed down through the family generations and joint Managing Directors John and Antony Winnard are the great, great nephews of the company’s founder.

The Mint Balls are still manufactured using the same traditional methods as when Mrs Santus originally made the sweets in her kitchen in 1898.
