A trio of top students from the University of Wolverhampton were celebrated with the help of a city organisation.

Three Biomedical students joined their family and friends, as well as representatives from Health Cash Plan provider Paycare, to recognise their academic success.

Joseph Holman, Jodie Black and Jodie Grice were all winners of the Paycare Science Awards, given to those who excel in their chosen university course.

Jodie Grice, who studied Applied Biomedical Science, has chosen a career in Medical Microbiology and is now working at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham identifying micro-organisms.

She said: “Getting this award from Paycare led me to deciding to apply for my Institute of Biomedical Science membership straightaway, and I also bought new books which have helped give me a more detailed understanding of what I’m doing in the laboratory and why. Getting this recognition has inspired me to keep learning, and knowing I have done well on my degree has given me a confidence boost.”

Jodie Black said, as a mature student, it had been challenging studying while raising her children but that it was a ‘great feeling’ when she found out she’d been awarded a Paycare prize.

“It’s so good to have my hard work acknowledged. It’s my aspiration to be a biomedical scientist in the NHS, as they work so hard behind the scenes to aid in the diagnosis of disease. Thank you to Paycare for the prize which I put towards my travel costs for my unpaid trainee placement year in an NHS laboratory.”

And Joseph Holman said he worked as a laboratory scientist during the pandemic, which had inspired him to enrol on the university course, and had now started a placement in the Clinical Biochemistry Department at New Cross Hospital.

“It means a lot to me that my efforts have been recognised by Paycare and Wolverhampton University, and I thank them for their generous prize.”

Paycare’s Partnerships Manager Sally Bromley and Customer Support Manager Clare Jarvis both attended the ceremony and later commented they were hugely impressed by the dedication, efforts and aptitude of the prize winners, who are all set to go on and make a valuable contribution to their chosen career sector and wider society.
