Punch and Judy show at funeral

When Rachael Lee approached West Midlands-based Jennifer Ashe & Son to arrange the funeral of her late mother, Carol Lee, she had a rather unconventional request – a Punch and Judy Puppet Show during the service to honour her mum’s love for the comedy duo.

Despite the unusual nature of the request, Joe Evans, Company Secretary and Funeral Director, understood the significance of the memory to Rachael and stepped forward to find a company able to fulfil her wish.

After hearing about Banana Brain Fun Shows, a business which hosts regular Punch and Judy Road Shows across Northamptonshire, Joe organised for the company to perform during the funeral, ensuring Rachael’s wish became a reality.

Rachael said: “It was just as I had imagined it and I know Mom would’ve loved it. Punch and Judy was always one of her favourites. We have used the business for previous family funerals and the team at Jennifer Ashe & Son have always been incredible and taken our every wish seriously. There’s not much they won’t do.”

For Rachael and her family, the performance served as a touching tribute to her mum’s life and the cherished memories they shared.

Joe Evans said: “As more people opt for personalised farewells, we’re seeing a rise in the number of out-of-the-ordinary requests. From a donkey attending a funeral to puppet shows, each service tends to reflect the individuality and spirit of the departed.

“With five branches across the West Midlands and Staffordshire, we serve more than 700 families per year. We understand that the needs of our communities are evolving, and we’re committed to adapting our services to meet those needs. By embracing unique requests like Rachael’s, we’re proud to be supporting people through the grieving process while honouring the legacy that will remain for those in attendance.”

Despite not following the usual order of service, the traditional red and white striped booth, where the Punch and Judy show took place, brought laughter and comfort to all attendees, ending the service with a heartwarming remembrance of Carol.
