Local mother-and-son turned business partners, Jemma Luiz and Sam Harrison, are teaming up to tackle the need for affordable home care and support in Sutton Coldfield and the surrounding areas. With Jemma’s two decades of experience in the care industry and Sam’s desire to make a real impact in his community, the duo is launching Hub Care Support – the Midlands’ ethical, innovative solution for compassionate and quality home support.
Jemma, who has worked in both the NHS and private care companies, is looking to leverage her experience in this new venture. “I worked across a lot of roles in the industry such as a carer, supervisor and area manager, which gave me a good idea of the bigger picture in the industry. What I did notice was a lot of clients wanting to have more power over when they received support. You’re only really matched by postcode, so I felt there was an opportunity to find a more personal approach to home support.”
For Sam, the motivation to work for himself and support his family coupled with wanting to make a difference in the area inspired him to launch his own business. “Previously, I’ve predominantly worked in construction and manufacturing, but I really wanted to do something off my own back that makes a real difference in my community. I’ve got a young family too, so I wanted to invest in something that could futureproof our lives. I’d lived the care industry through my mum’s experiences, so we both felt it’d be the perfect place to start.”
“For me, family is everything. So, when Sam and my other son – who is also involved in the business but more so behind the scenes – approached me to start our own business, it was an absolute no-brainer. Working closely with my sons in an industry I know inside-out seemed like a great idea,” says Jemma.
Hub Care Support guarantees that service users benefit from a consistent and high-quality care experience by introducing them to a register of dedicated independent Personal Support Assistants (PAs). What sets Hub Care Support apart is the ability for service users to choose their PA from a carefully curated register, securing a perfect match for their individual needs. The team at Sutton Coldfield will take the time to speak with service users personally, understanding their situation and requirements. All of Hub Care Support’s independent PAs are QCAS approved, have undergone full DBS checks, have received full training, are insured and have the right to work in the UK.
Hub Care Support Sutton Coldfield extend their services to residents in Streetly, Little Sutton, Minworth, Erdington, Queslett and Sutton Coldfield. Jemma and Sam’s longer-term goal is to expand their service to clients throughout Birmingham.
The branch is now looking to welcome more PAs and service users into their network. Jemma is committed to continuing the family feel of their business by creating a supportive environment. “The PAs we have working with us are lovely and they’re so integral to our business. We never want to lose sight of us being a family business, so it’s important to me and Sam to treat them as extended family.”
“We also want to work more in the community. We’ve been in touch with local charities and churches and are keen to reach out to more,” explains Sam. “We think it’s important to put a face to a name, so we want to attend coffee mornings or village fetes. We do really want to make Hub Care Support the true hub of the community in Sutton Coldfield and, if we expand our territory, ensure we stick to our roots as a family-run business.”
