Winter Wonderland at YSP

Yorkshire Sculpture Park’s Christmas decorations have a very personal touch this year with staff picking up paintbrushes to produce a unique winter wonderland frieze across the Visitor Centre.

The 10-strong team, led by Executive Co-ordinator Kirsty Fountain, devoted hours of their spare time before and after work to create the scenic snowflake and vine scenes that now cover the length of the Visitor Centre’s lower concourse.

Kirsty explained: “The concourse area lends itself to something rather dramatic but I had to think of cost-effective ways to decorate such a large space. We used chalk paint which wipes off easily but I also wanted to make an impact in the high ceiling space so we looked into paper lanterns with the intention of stringing them together.

“I continued with the early morning sessions and was joined by helpers along the way. Our fantastic tech team put up the lanterns and twinkly lights and the final effect is just magical.

“I have thoroughly enjoyed the whole project  – the research and the painting and particularly the response received from the staff and visitors who just love how it looks. I’m starting to think about next year already!”

Kirsty started work on the project at the beginning of November, completing the magical look this week. Collectively the team have invested around 100 hours between them on the transformation.
