A Huddersfield Hospice has received a £1,000 donation from 5 star homebuilder, Barratt Developments Yorkshire West.

The Kirkwood Hospice offers much needed support for patients, carers and family members affected by life limiting illness. The donation comes as part of Barratt Developments Yorkshire West’s monthly Community Fund initiative, which sees a different registered charity receive up to £1,000 from the homebuilder every month.

Inspired by a screening of the play “Going Gently” on BBC2, David Stocks set out to establish a hospice for local people. The play depicts the loneliness of two dying men in a hospital ward and is a far cry from The Kirkwood, which offers tailored palliative and in-patient care as well as spiritual therapies, counselling and massages. Since opening its doors in March 1987, the Huddersfield hospice has been improving the quality of hundreds of lives for those with life limiting illnesses.

Nigel Patrick from The Kirkwood said: “We were delighted when we received news that Barratt Developments Yorkshire West had chosen to support The Kirkwood with a £1,000 donation.

“The Kirkwood is so important to those facing life limiting illnesses across Kirklees. When time is short, we help to improve people’s quality of life in the ways that matter most to them, helping them to make the most of the time they have left. And we support their families and loved ones too. Our teams help patients and families in their own homes, in care homes and in towns and villages right across Kirklees, as well as providing 24-hour care at our hospice in Dalton.

“We’d like to thank Barratt Developments Yorkshire West for their kind donation. The Kirkwood rely on the generous support of our community to make sure we are here for everyone who needs us. This donation will help us to support life here in Kirklees.”

Martin Purdy, Commercial Director at Barratt Developments Yorkshire West commented: “We’re proud to support The Kirkwood Hospice this month. It’s important that we give back to the community and improve the lives of those living in the areas close to our developments. The Kirkwood does admirable work making a difference to those facing a terminal illness and we hope our donation will make a difference.”
