A Manchester-based recruitment agency is throwing its weight behind the national police rugby team on their upcoming Australian tour.

The City Recruiter has stepped up as a major sponsor for the GB Police Rugby Team, which includes officers from forces across the country.

The team will travel down under to take part in a competition against their Australian counterparts early next month.

As a part of the sponsorship, The City Recruiter’s logo is featured on the front of the police teams’ shirts.

Nick Ryan, Director of the recruitment firm, said: “The City Recruiter is thrilled to sponsor the GB Police Rugby Team on their Australian tour.

“We take pride in supporting these guys as they represent our country against the Aussie police.

“Being a sponsor is our way of contributing to the team’s success and showing our appreciation for all the fantastic work our police forces do.”

The tour will see police officers from six constabularies across the UK come together in Sydney on March 2nd to play against the Australian team and on March 6th against New South Wales Police.

Several members of the team, including the captain, Sgt Ben Marsden, hail from the Greater Manchester Police force.

Sponsors like The City Recruiter are important for the rugby team to be able to compete, as the tour is self-funded with the vast majority of the money coming from sponsorships.

Sgt Marsden said: “Sponsors like The City Recruiter are a massive support. We wouldn’t get the kit or be able to go without them. They’re the ones making it successful.

“I think playing team sports makes you a better police officer. You meet all different people from different backgrounds, and it makes relationships stronger.

“We use our rugby skills all the time. Whenever we’re in foot chases or trying to detain people, the fitness helps on the streets.

“Speaking on behalf of all the boys, it’s nice to be able to get away and play the sport you love. It’s a nice treat for all of the hard work the lads put into their job and other commitments, and without the sponsors it wouldn’t go ahead.”

While The City Recruiter is sponsoring the rugby team in a show of support, it also has a personal connection to the sport, as Nick used to play rugby for Salford Academy.

He started playing when he was 10, however was forced to stop after an injury, but continued to follow the sport.

“I love rugby and will always feel a connection to the sport,” Nick said. “While I don’t play anymore it is great to be able to support other players who are just as passionate.

“I feel like I’ve been able to reconnect with rugby through this event and hope to see our team come back from Australia with a win.”
