Socomec Celebrates 500th Battery Energy Storage System Milestone 

Driven by rapid expansion across commercial and industrial sites and EV charging infrastructure 

Socomec, a specialist in battery energy storage systems (BESS), has today announced it has marked the sale of its 500th BESS system globally – a 10MWh project in Mutterstadt, Germany for German solar developer Rheinland Solar and renewable energy company BayWa r.e., combining two of Socomec’s SMARTSYS M5000 BESS units with a solar installation. The milestone signals rising demand for energy storage across commercial and industrial sites, EV charging infrastructure and increasingly front-of-the-meter, grid-support applications. More than half of the systems have been sold since the start of 2024, underlining Socomec’s growing role in helping operators improve resilience, integrate renewables, stabilise power grids and increase system flexibility. 

The 10MWh project in Mutterstadt combines solar generation with battery energy storage to increase onsite renewable consumption, reduce peak demand and improve resilience for a large industrial coldstorage and logistics site with continuous electricity demand. Just yesterday, the project was recognised with an award at Socomec’s booth at ees Europe, part of The Smarter E Europe in Munich, marking the company’s 500th BESS installation worldwide. 

This latest achievement reflects the rapid scaling of a business built on trusted technical expertise. Established in 2014 within a company of more than a century of power management heritage, Socomec’s BESS unit grew from a proof-of-concept project in Nice, France, into a global operation of around 70 employees across Europe and the US. 

Today, Socomec’s BESS systems span a global footprint, with 325 across EMEA – particularly in the high-penetration renewable markets of Italy, Spain and Germany – and a further 175 in North America, where deployments are typically also configured for backup capability. Socomec is also present in overseas French territories and Africa, where its systems underpin off-grid and hybrid energy systems. 

Across its 500 systems sold, Socomec has supported a wide range of use cases: 

  • In the UK, it supplied 9.3 MWh of battery energy storage to a major sporting arena, replacing traditional diesel generators and providing around three hours of continued operation for priority infrastructure during a mains failure.  
  • In southern Europe, Socomec supported an ultra-fast EV charging operator with energy storage designed to avoid waiting up to two years for grid reinforcement, helping charging stations deliver up to 360 kW while maintaining service quality at peak demand. To date, more than 50 BESS have been deployed for this single customer across Spain, supporting both on-grid and off-grid EV charging sites and accelerating the rollout of EV charging infrastructure. 
  • In Spain, Socomec combined BESS with solar, wind power and generator assets in a hybrid microgrid designed for autonomous, multi-source energy management. This marked the company’s first project 10 years ago, with the batteries still running today.  
  • In France, a collective self-consumption project used BESS to help 62 apartments increase energy autonomy from locally produced solar power.  
  • In Italy, Socomec enabled Trieste Airport to achieve 70 percent renewable energy self-consumption and cut more than 500 tonnes of CO₂ annually. The project has won two separate industry awards in 2026. 

This commercial momentum sits alongside continued product innovation. Earlier this month, Socomec unveiled its new SMARTSYS range, extending its offering into utility-scale energy storage to support higher-capacity deployments of up to 5 MVA / 20 MWh. In April 2026, Socomec launched its SoLive Pro BESS digital monitoring platform, which allows operators to track system performance in real time and take targeted actions that can extend battery lifetime by up to 20 percent and reduce their total cost of ownership.
