Commercial outfitter Novograf is developing an apprenticeship scheme with the aim of bringing new talent into the signage industry and closing the age gap.

On 9th May 2022, the first apprentice, Angus Hay from Calderglen High School in East Kilbride, joined the company for a one-year apprenticeship based on the Digital Apprenticeship Program. This is in partnership with South Lanarkshire Council Employability Services and the Qualification Authority (QA).

Novograf is on a mission to train young, talented people, expand their skills, and grow the industry.

Ross Campbell, Digital Business Development Manager at Novograf, said: “In the last few years, Novograf has made a big leap into its evolution as a leading business in the signage and surface industry. Alongside adopting new technology and branching into new industries, we’re also focusing on attracting talented people, who are a breath of fresh air not just to us as a company but to the whole industry.

“Our plan is to train our first apprentice and roll out an apprenticeship scheme the following year. We want to change people’s perceptions about the signage/surface industry and close the age gap for good.”

The apprentice will receive first-hand experience in a creative and innovative company. Working alongside 40 other employees who possess a wealth of knowledge and experience, he will be trained on the whole process from the initial design concept all the way to the manufacturing stage and will have the opportunity to work on bespoke projects.

New technology is also key to the industry’s evolution. The apprentice will learn how to operate all sorts of equipment in order to pass along the knowledge to future generations.
