Author Gate Publishes Debut Novel By Bob Jope

UK publisher Author Gate has released Obsession, the debut psychological drama from novelist Bob Jope, a dark exploration of rivalry, fandom, and the fragile line between ambition and self-destruction.

The novel follows a biographical writer whose fixation on surpassing a professional competitor slowly unravels into spiralling mental illness and deep personal unhappiness. What begins as artistic ambition transforms into something far more corrosive, raising unsettling questions about envy, identity, and the cost of creative success.

For Jope, the story stems from a long-standing fascination with the extremes of human character, particularly among those striving for recognition.

“I have always been interested by the extremes of people’s characters, particularly when it comes to those who achieve great success,” Jope explains. “I often wonder: for every person who makes it, how many don’t? And how are they regarded? Are they considered failures? Forgotten?”

That curiosity led him to explore the psychology of fandom, not just admiration, but the tipping point at which devotion mutates into obsession.

“There are people who adore a person or piece of art to the point of obsession, often following in the footsteps of their idol,” he says. “But at what point does this admiration become dangerous for them as a person, and for the people around them?”

While the novel stands as a work of fiction, its emotional roots are personal. Jope acknowledges that the story was partly inspired by his own genuine fandom of Bob Dylan, widely regarded as one of the most influential musicians of the 20th century. However, readers do not need to be Dylan enthusiasts to connect with the book’s themes.

“I hope the theme of compulsiveness can resonate with anyone who has something they’re deeply passionate about,” Jope says.

Interestingly, the novel’s title was not Jope’s original choice. The final name emerged through collaboration with his publisher’s editorial team, who felt the core of the story lay in its examination of fixation and inner turmoil.
