Beelivery Data Reveals White Wine Now Outsells Beer Among UK Students
Cheshire-headquartered grocery delivery service Beelivery has uncovered a notable shift in student consumption trends, with new research revealing that 61% of UK students now prefer white wine over beer. The findings, based on nationwide purchasing data during Freshers’ Week, point to a generational change in how young people socialise and spend, with taste and lifestyle considerations increasingly driving purchase decisions.
Traditional staples of student life such as lager multipacks and mainstream spirits are losing ground to lighter, more versatile drinks like Pinot Grigio, Sauvignon Blanc, and Chardonnay. The data suggests that the era of beer-dominated shopping baskets is waning, replaced by a preference for beverages associated with social connection and a sense of refinement.
At the same time, students are deprioritising everyday essentials. Only 27% reported buying basic groceries such as milk, bread, or eggs during Freshers’ Week — a clear sign that socialising and convenience take precedence in early university life.
The research reflects a wider transformation across the drinks and grocery retail sectors, as Gen Z continues to reshape consumption habits and challenge long-held assumptions about what defines the modern student experience.
Paul Gott, Chief Operating Officer at Beelivery, said: “It is official. White wine has taken over student life. Beer might still have its place at the pub, but this generation clearly prefers something a little more refined for pre-drinks.”
Launched in 2015, Beelivery provides rapid delivery of groceries and household essentials within 15 to 60 minutes, covering 90 per cent of UK households.
