Bemrose pupils celebrate Sir David Attenborough’s birthday with nature-inspired careers event

A Derby school marked the birthday of national treasure Sir David Attenborough by exploring how a love of nature and animals can inspire future careers.

Pupils at The Bemrose Primary School, in Uttoxeter Road, took part in a range of activities linked to the birthday of the celebrated broadcaster and environmental campaigner, learning more about wildlife, sustainability and nature-based careers.

The event encouraged pupils to consider how caring for the environment and animals can lead to a wide range of future career opportunities, including environmental, land-based and sustainability-focused roles.

Throughout the day, pupils explored the importance of protecting the planet through hands-on activities, discussions and creative projects designed to spark curiosity about the world around them.

Seven-year-old Prince, said: “I have loved hearing all about the careers that are like David Attenborough. I am a big fan of his.
“Me and my friends sang Happy Birthday on a video and sent it to him.

“I love animals like him and one day I want to be a marine biologist.”

Year 3 pupils explored the wonders of the ocean and jungle before creating their own imaginative designs showing how they would like these natural environments to look and thrive in the future.

Clare Amos, careers lead at The Bemrose School, said: ““Pupils have been completely fascinated as we explored the incredible work and legacy of Sir David Attenborough and the many careers connected to the natural world.

“The activities sparked some really engaging discussions around future careers, with many pupils surprised by the wide range of opportunities linked to wildlife, sustainability and conservation.

“Using such a well-loved and inspirational figure helped bring the subject to life and encouraged pupils to think about how their own passions and interests could shape their future careers.”

Pupils also reflected on how small everyday actions can make a big difference to the environment, while learning about the skills needed for careers focused on sustainability and conservation.

Headteacher Jason Pass, said: “Sir David Attenborough has inspired generations to appreciate and protect nature, so we wanted to use his birthday as an opportunity to show pupils the exciting careers and opportunities connected to the environment.

“It was fantastic to see the children so engaged and passionate about the natural world.

“Activities like this help broaden horizons and encourage pupils to think positively about their futures.”
