5 of its last 7 realised funds have been top quartile

ECI Partners, one of the UK’s pioneering private equity firms, today marks its 50th anniversary, celebrating five decades of backing ambitious management teams and helping British businesses grow.

Founded on 22 June 1976 as Equity Capital for Industry with support from the Bank of England, ECI launched with a £40 million fund. Today, the firm manages approximately £3 billion and is deploying its latest £1 billion fund, ECI 12.

Over the past 50 years, ECI has supported more than 200 management buyouts and completed over 250 investments, helping shape the UK’s mid-market private equity sector. The firm’s performance has remained consistently strong, with five of its last seven realised funds ranking in the top quartile.

David Ewing, Managing Partner at ECI Partners, said:
“Fifty years is a long time in any industry, but especially in private equity. We’ve focused on staying disciplined, evolving our capabilities and partnering with exceptional management teams. We’re proud to have played a small part in the growth journeys of some fantastic businesses and to see many continue to thrive long after our investment.”

A key factor in ECI’s longevity has been its ability to evolve. The firm was the first UK mid-market private equity house to establish a dedicated Origination team and later a specialist Commercial Team focused on value creation. Today, ECI is investing heavily in data, technology and AI to help both its own investment activity and the growth of portfolio companies.

Chris Watt, Managing Partner at ECI Partners, said:
“You don’t last fifty years in private equity by standing still. We’re helping management teams harness AI and data to identify opportunities, scale faster and make better decisions. These capabilities are transforming how we source investments and support growth.”

ECI has also distinguished itself through long-term succession planning. Since introducing a managed leadership transition model in 1999, the firm has completed five leadership transitions without a mid-market team spin-out. In contrast, 62% of UK private equity firms remain founder-led and 52% of the top 50 mid-market PE firms are the product of a spin out, while 26% have had a spin out since they were founded.

Looking ahead, ECI believes the next chapter of private equity will be shaped by technology, data and global access to capital. The firm’s focus remains unchanged: partnering with ambitious management teams to build exceptional businesses.

Tom Wrenn, Managing Partner at ECI Partners, said:
“What drives us is finding the next fantastic business to back. Fifty years on, that’s still what motivates us today and will continue to do so for many years to come.”
