The team at Llys Cyncoed celebrate being nominated at the Care Home Awards

A care home in Cardiff is celebrating after being announced as a finalist for a prestigious national award.

Care UK’s Llys Cyncoed, on Cyncoed Road, has been shortlisted in the Care Home Awards 2024 in the ‘Best for Specialist Care’ category.

The awards recognise teams and individuals that epitomise excellence, innovation, dedication and outstanding contributions within the care sector.

The home was praised for its evidence-based approach to care, personalised care plans, collaboration with family members and friends, and establishing a dementia-friendly environment to empower residents to live fulfilling lives.

The team is committed to using best practices in the care of older people, and this has included achieving the impressive Care Fit for VIPs accreditation – capitalising on Care UK’s partnership with the University of Worcester to better support those living with dementia. This accreditation ensures that the care provided is rooted in compassion and also backed by the latest research and methodologies, setting a benchmark for excellence in the industry.

The home’s use of individualised care plans was noted by the judges, which are created by working closely with relatives of each resident. Enhancing the quality of life for each resident, these plans help to promote a sense of dignity and autonomy.

Residents are encouraged to retain a sense of identity as well as their independence, even as their abilities change through dementia-friendly environments and activities. The home’s use of lifestyle stations, which have different themes, such as a DIY station that has various tools used for woodwork. There is also an office station complete with a manual typewriter, a rolodex and date stampers. These stations are designed to evoke happy memories, and the team are also able to learn more about the residents’ hobbies and past to help aid them in creating new activities.

The garden is accessible to all residents and has raised flower beds to encourage pottering for those who have always enjoyed gardening. Activities include planting herbs, which are then used by the kitchen team to prepare food, along with making jam from the fruit that is grown. This helps provide a sense of purpose and resident’s families have expressed appreciation for the freedom residents experience here.
