Engineering excellence from Will Rudd helps deliver transformation of Edinburgh’s iconic King’s Theatre

Multi-award-winning civil, structural and conservation engineering consultancy Will Rudd has completed its work on the landmark redevelopment of Edinburgh’s King’s Theatre, bringing to a close several years of complex engineering on one of Scotland’s most iconic cultural venues.

Working as part of the wider project team, Will Rudd delivered the civil and structural engineering services for the major refurbishment, supporting a programme of works designed to modernise the Grade A listed theatre while carefully preserving its historic character.

The redevelopment included major work to raise the theatre’s fly tower by five metres to accommodate a new flying system capable of supporting modern productions, replacing the original stage with a new flat performance stage, creating a larger and more accessible basement bar, delivering a new café through a significant extension to the existing building, and supporting the installation of a new entrance canopy.

Alongside these significant interventions, the project required careful planning to protect the theatre’s historic fabric while introducing new spaces and facilities that will support audiences and performers for generations to come.

Delivering the works also presented a number of engineering challenges. Surrounded by tenement buildings, narrow access lanes and one of Edinburgh’s busiest roads, every stage of the project required close collaboration and careful planning to deliver major structural improvements within a highly constrained city centre site.
