Yorkshire-based Player Support Services has brought on board Macclesfield-based former professional football coach Pete Lowe to provide mentoring and coaching to its clients.

Pete spent 13 years as a coach at Manchester City FC academy where he was part of a team that developed a talent pipeline creating 39 first-team footballers and 25 full international players.

Working with Player Support Services alongside the company’s other experts, Pete will now provide one-to-one mentoring and advice to athletes and organisations across all sports.

PSS was founded by former elite military doctor Dr Simon Le Clerc who left the forces with combat post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in 2020. Dr Simon now uses his own experiences to help professional athletes during and after their sporting careers.

The player care company works with forward-thinking sports organisations to meet the needs of their people, as well as working directly with individual clients.

Organisations and athletes who use Player Support Services receive a range of services including intensive one-to-one coaching, specialist psychological support for career-ending injuries, personal character profiling, rebranding support and more.

Commenting on joining Player Support Services, Pete said: “Simon and the team are doing something truly inspiring. There’s no-one else looking holistically at the needs of players in this way and that’s massively valuable to clubs and sport companies.

“He’s a genuine guy with a no-nonsense approach – and most importantly he’s got the interests of players at heart. That’s why I’m happy to join the team providing mentoring and support to players who need it.”

The company already counts among its clients Scottish golf professional Scott Henry and former Olympic sailor Christina Handasyde Dick MBE (formerly Bassadone) who now runs her own home care company.

Dr Simon said: “Pete is a fantastic addition to our offering and he shares our belief that the current approach to player welfare isn’t working. We want every sportsperson to be fulfilled in and after their sporting life.

“Player care isn’t just about mental health, it’s every aspect of life from finances and relationships to planning their career after sport. I know many forward-thinking organisations do care about their players, and we’re here to help them meet those needs.”
