An apprentice at security firm Gough and Kelly has won Apprentice of the Year for security, fire, and alarms.
The FE Student and Apprenticeship awards are held annually at Bradford College and apprentices are celebrated for their achievements throughout the past academic year in a variety of sectors. Jazz Sheldon, who received the accolade, was recognised as stand-out in his field.
Jazz started at the Yorkshire firm in 2019 as an Apprentice Security Systems Engineer and is now in his third year of the City & Guilds Fire, Emergency and Security Systems Technician course at Bradford College. When the apprenticeship ends, Jazz will be offered a full-time position and join the team at Gough and Kelly.
Raymond Lang, Lecturer FESS at Bradford College, said “Jazz Sheldon was coming to the end of his second year, when, like all other students, he had his learning stilted due to lockdown restrictions. However, he is fully committed to becoming a first class engineer. Within the classroom environment Jazz strives to achieve all the challenges set for him and, he assists/mentors the weaker students within the group.
“The award for Apprentice of the Year was to be decided from across four different cohorts of learners, each at different stages of their apprenticeship. The decision to nominate Jazz was for the reasons delineated above and we’d like to say a huge well done to Jazz for what he has achieved.”
Laine Morris, Group HR Director at Gough and Kelly, added “Jazz joined Gough and Kelly in 2019 and has proved to be a hard-working, motivated and positive apprentice from the very beginning. He has an excellent attitude and is well on the way to becoming a highly skilled engineer with an exciting career ahead of him. He deserves to be awarded the Apprentice of the Year and we are all very proud of his achievements both in College and within our business.”
The award-winning company usually takes on one apprentice per year as part of its youth development objective. This year, however, the firm has experienced substantial growth following a number of new contract wins, and has been able to facilitate the intake of six apprentices across the business.
