Which would be more likely to sway you into a job offer? Would you rather your new employer upped their monetary offer, or would you prefer more lucrative perks?

That’s exactly what Bolton digital marketing agency, The Audit Lab, wanted to know. They asked the British public ‘When looking for a new job , which is most important to you; higher salary or better benefits?’ and have taken an in-depth look at each region’s answers.

While other regions showed more of a split in their choices, the North West was firmly divided on the issue, with 50% sitting on either side of the fence. Are Northerners simply undecided on the issue? Or is this clear indication that a ‘one or the other’ approach just isn’t going to work?

The Audit Lab’s very own Claire Crompton – which is based in the North West – says she strives to provide a true balance for all her employees:

“Different people want different things out of their careers, and that goes for both direction and rewards. And while we can’t completely customise a package for everyone, what we aim to do is strike a perfect balance. Good work perks shouldn’t come at the price of a great salary that compensates our people for all the hard work they do. That’s why we offer pay reviews every six months and customised progression plans, with additional benefits such as working from home, 10 – 4 core working hours, and hangover days. There really is no ‘one size fits all’ approach when it comes to someone’s career; it’s really about putting together the best all-round package.”

Raimy Greenland from RDM says she, amongst others, wants to be appreciated:

“I love companies that value their staff. Showing that value with regular opportunities to understand career trajectories, pay reviews and flexibility is what I look for in an employer. If I can see they will trust me enough to work from home and offer me flexibility to work around my family, that’s who I want to work for. I don’t want to live to work, I want to love to work and time/flexibility is more valuable than money to me.”

North West – by gender

The two sexes weren’t much different to the overall majority.

An even balance between great perks and a decent salary is what’s going to entice men and women in the North West, if we’re going off these numbers.

Men were completely evenly split between the two, but women were more likely to choose a higher salary (52%) but only just as you can see.

So, be sure to put together the whole package if you’re recruiting here.

North West – by age

Almost all those in the North West were in agreement; they would much prefer a balance of salary and great perks when it comes to job offers.

●     18 – 24 year olds – 50% higher salary, 50% perks

●     25 – 34 year olds – 44% higher salary, 56% perks

●     35 – 44 year olds – 54% higher salary, 46% perks

●     45 – 54 year olds – 53% higher salary, 47% perks

●     55 – 64 year olds – 56% higher salary, 44% perks

●     65+ year olds – 30% higher salary, 70% perks

What is really surprising is the dramatic swing in favour of benefits when you ask those aged 65 years and older. Maybe they realised there’s more to life than work?
