Manchester Recruitment Firm Backs Snowdon Climb to Fund Scoliosis Treatments.

A Manchester recruitment firm has supported a charity climb up Snowdon, raising thousands for scoliosis awareness after being inspired by a young woman who was told she might never walk again due to the condition.

The City Recruiter’s Kyle Wilding joined a group of budding climbers which included close friend Niamh Finerty who discovered she had serious scoliosis as a teenager.

The endeavour which took place earlier this month aimed to raise awareness about the condition affecting the spine, and to generate funds to support those in need of life-changing surgery.

The expedition raised a total of £3,140 which will also go towards The Scoliosis Association.

Having endured scoliosis since her childhood, Niamh experienced multiple life-threatening surgeries which motivated her to share her story and raise awareness while also encouraging people to regularly check their spines.

“When I was diagnosed with congenital scoliosis, I was told that I could be in a wheelchair and completely paralysed by my late 20s if I didn’t have the operation,” said Niamh.

“There was also a chance I could die during the surgery.”

Later, she needed a second surgery, lasting 9 hours, after which she had to learn how to walk again.

“Those years were the hardest times of my life, and I would not wish for anybody to go through it. It gives you a new appreciation for life.

“It was a difficult thing to process as a child, so I encourage people to regularly check their own spines and most importantly their children’s.

“I’m very proud of myself and the team for helping me with this cause. Any donations are much appreciated and will make such a huge difference to so many people’s lives.”

Staff from The City Recruiter, a major supporter of the initiative, went on the challenging hike, spanning approximately 1,085 meters, which was both a physical and emotional journey for all participants, many of whom had personal connections to the cause.

Kyle Wilding, Senior Consultant at the firm, said the cause was also personal for him as his young cousin has idiopathic scoliosis.

“As well as my friend Niamh being affected by this disease, this cause is very important to me as scoliosis affects a dear member of my family.

“By climbing Snowdon, we wanted to shine a spotlight on the struggles faced by those with scoliosis and raise funds to help them receive the surgical treatment they need.

“It was a challenging climb but knowing that our efforts could make a real difference in someone’s life kept us motivated.”
