While small business owners are now recognising the need to have a marketing strategy in place, over a half (56%) are having to manage this on their own. That’s according to the latest research from website building platform, Zyro, which has analysed the responsibilities of small business owners during Covid-19.

The research, which surveyed 100 small business owners across the UK and US, looked to uncover how SME business priorities have changed as a result of the pandemic.

Although SME owners are fully responsible for their companies’ marketing — likely due to spending cuts brought on by Covid-19 — three quarters of respondents (70%) stated they had never received any marketing training. For many, this has meant having to manage the following aspects of their business with very little or no expertise:

  • Over a half (54%) are responsible for writing all of their copy and marketing content
  • 54% designed their own logo, while 58% had to invent their company slogan
  • Nearly half (47%) still write all of their blog content
  • 54% are must manage and update their own company websites

Commenting on the new research, Gytis Labašauskas, CMO at Zyro said “The Covid-19 pandemic has forced many small businesses around the globe to cut costs and pause spend in order to stay afloat. For the majority, the first budget to be cut when facing times of hardship is marketing, but it’s great to see that so many small business owners are recognising the importance of having a marketing strategy in place to prevent their business from grinding to a halt.”

“Being responsible for a company’s marketing strategy and successfully executing campaigns can be extremely daunting — especially for those with very little training or knowledge on the subject. But thankfully, simple and affordable tools are available for small businesses to help them with their company’s marketing efforts — from easy-to-use website builders, blog content generators and logo makers — meaning business owners can make the time for more important work and focus on business growth.”
