The Park Hill UpRise Urban Hill Climb, which took place last Saturday 25th March, has raised £628 for chosen local charities, Roundabout, a South Yorkshire youth shelter project, and Woodhead Mountain Rescue, part of a national network of Mountain Rescue units who assist and rescue anyone using Sheffield and the neighbouring Peak District’s more rugged open spaces.

Organised by Sheffield Cyclocross, with sponsorship support from Westfield Health and cycle shops J E James, Sheffield and the Giant Store, Sheffield, the event hosted three cycling events for a range of ages and experiences over the cobbled climbs of the city’s iconic Park Hill flats.

The event formed part of the Festival of The Outdoors, a month-long festival of events and activities that showcase why Sheffield is The Outdoor City, and saw over 60 riders join the races, including triple Olympic champion and British former professional track and road bicycle racer, Ed Clancy OBE.

Clancy, who was appointed the region’s new Active Travel Commissioner earlier this year, commented:

“It’s my priority as Active Travel Commissioner to make active travel about fun, freedom and transport in South Yorkshire.

“Events like The Park Hill UpRise Urban Hill Climb, that encourage everyone of all ages and abilities to have a go, get outside and get active play a huge part in that – breaking down barriers that prevent children and adults getting involved in cycling, wheeling or walking.

“The race today shows you don’t have to embark on Olympic level training to get there. As far as I’m concerned, all you need to be to be part of the team is a desire for a healthier, prosperous future for yourself and our next generation. I’ll work to improve South Yorkshire’s active travel network for this reason, so everyone feels like they have a real and safe choice to make healthier journeys.”

Sheffield Urban Cyclo event manager, Adam Simmonite said:

“A huge thank you to all those who attended the Park Hill Uprise event, helping us raise much needed funds for some of our city’s most deserving charities.

“Sheffield Urban Cyclo events have always been about highlighting cycling in the urban environment with races for all generations and abilities to take part in.

“It was fantastic to see how well received the races were and our thanks to the spectators too, for making it a real day to remember in a great spot to explore Sheffield.”
