E-commerce SME Send Them Cupcakes has seen growth of 350% since lockdowns were rolled out in the UK in March, 2020.

The family-owned business delivers cupcake gifts UK-wide on a next day service, and believes that high street stores as well as restaurants and cafés being closed has been key to this growth. As consumers nationwide were unable to access local services, they had their needs met by online shopping.

Based near Glasgow, Scotland, Send Them Cupcakes has also seen increases in conversion rates in older consumers. There has been a 180% increase in those aged between 55 and 64, and another 20% in those aged 64 and over.

Founder and Managing Director James McGoldrick believes that older customers previously may have been reluctant to use online shopping but as the pandemic has pushed them towards the internet to meet their needs, many have experienced the convenience that comes with it.

“We’ve seen a lot more gifts going to and from grandparents and grandchildren over the last year,” James says. “Despite these family members being divided, they still want to celebrate occasions like birthdays. When they can’t go shopping in non-essential stores for gifts, and they can’t go to each others’ houses to give them, they have turned to Send Them Cupcakes to celebrate in some capacity.

“As a business, we at Send Them Cupcakes like to know that our hard work brings some cheer and comfort to people across the nation in what has been a stressful and scary year.”

Now that lockdowns are easing, Send Them Cupcakes is experiencing a small dip in demand, and are imploring consumers across the nation not to forget the online businesses that helped them over the last year.
