UK Shoppers Confused by French Wine in Supermarkets
Calvet has launched a nationwide retail campaign with wine expert Helen McGinn to tackle one of the UK wine category’s most persistent challenges: shopper confusion about French wine.
Despite continued interest in premiumisation, many UK consumers still find French wine difficult to navigate, often defaulting to more clearly labelled regions such as Italy, Spain or New World producers. Industry data suggests that while shoppers are willing to spend more per bottle, confidence remains a key barrier to trading up.
A Taste of France with Helen McGinn targets this gap at the shelf level, combining digital content, e-commerce integration, and in-store activations across major UK retailers.
Rolling out from April 2026, the six-part content series sees McGinn select wines from key French regions and pair them with accessible, home-cooked dishes. Episodes will be distributed via her Instagram channel (@knackeredmother), with embedded links driving shoppers to supermarket listings.
The activity is supported in-store across Tesco, Sainsbury’s, Morrisons, Co-op, Waitrose and Ocado, with selected SKUs featuring POS and neck tags highlighting recommended pairings and regional cues to simplify decision-making.
The campaign reflects a broader shift towards more joined-up retail execution, linking inspiration, education and purchase in a single journey. By combining social content with physical retail prompts, the activation aims to reduce friction in the wine aisle and encourage shoppers to explore beyond familiar categories.
Henry Colyer, Marketing Manager at Calvet, said: “French wine offers incredible diversity, but we recognise that shoppers often need clearer guidance on the shelf. This campaign is about turning regional complexity into something practical and accessible, helping consumers feel confident trading up and trying new styles.”
The six regions featured include Bordeaux, Burgundy, Alsace, Loire and Rhône, positioning Calvet as a gateway brand for shoppers looking to explore French wine with greater confidence.
Helen McGinn added: “Once shoppers understand a region’s style and how it works with the food they already enjoy, French wine becomes far more accessible. This campaign is about making those connections simple and relevant for everyday occasions.”
The activation will run through to early 2027, supported by ongoing digital content, social amplification and seasonal in-store activity aligned to key consumption moments.
