Life-saving charity Dumfries and Galloway Health Endowment Fund has received a generous £2,000 donation from leading roof-tile manufacturer, Russell Roof Tiles.

Like many manufacturers, Russell Roof Tiles felt the damaging impact of Covid-19 but is pleased to be in a position to support community services.

Employing 49 staff at its 11-acre Halleaths site, in Lochmaben the roof tile manufacturer is dedicated to supporting causes within the local community which led to the creation of a special Community Fund which allowed a number of charities to share and benefit from a fundraising pot.

Staff from Russell Roof Tiles have cooked, swam and volunteered to generate cash for the Community Fund, since 2015 has raised over £80,000 by the support of customers, suppliers and staff and its three factories.

The Dumfries and Galloway Health Endowment Fund is the latest to benefit and the charity supports the improvement of health and wellbeing of communities in the area served by NHS Dumfries and Galloway.

Their work includes ensuring hospitals and treatment centres support the provision of state-of-the-art equipment; staff training and development; supporting innovative research and projects; supporting Third Sector organisations and volunteer services.

Bruce Laidlaw, Production Director at Russell Roof Tiles said: “We are delighted that during a very difficult time for many industries that we are still able to offer our support to the Dumfries and Galloway Health Endowment Fund. The Dumfries and Galloway Hospital was the centre for Covid-19 care in the region, and their work has been invaluable through these challenging months.

“The charity provides pivotal support within the community, and Russell Roof Tiles is proud to support in any way we can.”

Colin Stevenson, Russell Roof Tiles Lockerbie Yard Supervisor presented his wife, Morag Stevenson an NHS worker with the cheque. Colin himself has over 30 years’ service at Russell Roof Tiles in Lochmaben, and Morag has over 30 years’ service with NHS at Lochmaben hospital.

Welcoming this donation, a spokesperson for NHS Dumfries and Galloway said: “This £2,000 donation comes as a great boost and special thanks to Russell Roof Tiles of Lochmaben.

“Our staff are doing an amazing job during this unprecedented disruption to daily lives. Over the past six months, increased support and advice, for both physical and mental health, has been given to staff and teams.

“We plan to use the money to continue to support our staff on the ground with mental health and psychological support.”
