From NHS Wards to Global Stages: Jessen James on the Psychology of Income Growth
A former psychiatric nurse who built financial freedom by 31 is now on a mission to help thousands of professionals and entrepreneurs boost their income – not by working harder, but by learning the psychology of influence.
Jessen James, who grew up facing hardship as the son of Mauritian immigrants before becoming one of the UK’s youngest ward managers at 27, has since built, bought and sold multiple businesses and established himself as an award-winning international speaker. With a rising profile and fast-growing reputation, he is now positioned as a global leading voice in sales psychology.
Twice featured on Channel 5’s Rich House Poor House and seen on BBC and Netflix, James has spoken alongside global names including Gary Vaynerchuk, Les Brown and Deepak Chopra. His journey reflects a wider trend of professionals seeking alternative paths to growth, highlighting a shift away from traditional sales tactics.
Now, through his Influence To Income Method™, he is teaching people how to harness “the psychology of yes” to land pay rises, win new clients, and transform their financial futures. Entrepreneurs are taking note of his approach, which he says is proving vital in today’s economy.
“This isn’t about business jargon or corporate scripts,” says James. “It’s about human behaviour. If you can’t get people to say yes, you’ll stay stuck – no matter how good you are.”
James believes too many professionals blame their CV or their side hustle for holding them back, when the real obstacle is their ability to influence. “Most people think they’ve got a lead problem. What I actually tell them is that what they’ve really got is a sales flow problem.”
He adds: “Not sales in the old-school, cheesy way, but sales as in: your ability to help someone say YES. Yes to your product, your idea, your value. That’s where the money comes from at the end of the day.”
With the cost-of-living crisis squeezing households and businesses, James says sharpening these skills is critical: “Without having that good income you can’t invest or even think about growing any sort of wealth. I’m not trying to scare anyone, but it’s sink or swim time right now. People are struggling, businesses are struggling. With the economy being the way it is, people need to get better at selling. Consumers are still buying – they’re just buying from those who know how to sell best. And this is how you are going to start fixing it today.”
This signals a new chapter in his mission to change how people think about influence – one he believes can make a measurable difference to both careers and businesses.
Five psychological tricks to start making more money today
Jessen James has shared with Business Mondays five psychological “mind hacks” he says can turn conversations into opportunities.
Talk to the version of them that already said yes
“People don’t buy when they understand – they buy when they feel understood… remember this – you’ve already got the gig, you’ve already got the yes in theory, and ‘the buyer’ is now just looking for a reason to say no. So, don’t let them find a reason to say no!”
People buy confidence, not credentials
“At the end of the day, people buy into your certainty more than your credentials… That calm authority makes people believe you can deliver – so own it.”
Don’t just show what they’ll gain – show what they’ll lose by not moving
“Fact: The human brain is wired to avoid pain more than it’s wired to chase pleasure… When the pain of staying the same gets louder than the fear of change – that’s when they move.”
Match their mood, command the room
“If someone’s uncertain, and you come in like a bulldozer – you’ll lose them instantly. Meet them. Match them. Then lead them.”
Make it feel like their idea
“Let’s be frank, people don’t like being sold to – but they love buying… when it feels like their decision, they’ll commit harder and faster.”
Jessen James says these subtle shifts can be the difference between ambition and actual results: “So whether you’re trying to grow your bank balance or just stop leaving money on the table, start practising today to start turning your conversations into cash.”
