Is this the end of the sit-down dinner? Gen Z event bookers shun three courses for sociable, flexible experiences
The traditional three-course corporate dinner could soon be a thing of the past, as Gen Z event bookers reshape the industry with a demand for more relaxed, sociable experiences.
Following a decade that has transformed the world of work, with hybrid models, flexible schedules and a growing focus on wellbeing, these shifting priorities are now influencing how events are designed and delivered.
Dubbed the ‘Gen Z Effect’, a new wave of event planning is emerging. Formal dining is being replaced by street food and bowl food concepts, rigid table plans are disappearing, and earlier start times are becoming the norm.
Today’s bookers are prioritising connection over convention, creating events where guests can move freely, socialise widely and enjoy a more informal atmosphere.
Unity Place in Milton Keynes has reported a significant shift in client preferences, with growing demand for more relaxed, social and experience-led event formats.
Head of Sales, Megan Hassall, said: “There’s been a clear move towards more informal, sociable events, and we’re seeing it in the vast majority of enquiries. Clients are choosing street food and bowl food over traditional sit-down meals so guests can mix, mingle and eat on their own terms.”
“Start times are moving too. Events now typically begin at 5pm rather than 7pm, allowing guests to transition straight from a daytime conference and still get home at a reasonable hour. Overnight stays are becoming far less appealing.
“This shift is also being driven by a growing focus on wellbeing. Younger conference goers are increasingly seeking moments to recharge during events, with options such as wellness breaks, breathwork sessions and quiet spaces helping to reduce stress and prevent burnout.
“The whole vibe is more relaxed. Guests want to move between groups, keep conversations flowing and enjoy the experience without being tied to one table all night. Even entertainment is changing – we’re seeing growing demand for live bands and roaming musicians that match the fluidity of the event.
“Is this the end of the sit-down dinner? It certainly feels like it. The traditional format is waning, and the Gen Z event looks very different to what came before.”
Unity Place’s newly launched Event Packages reflect change in direction, offering curated experiences built around flexibility, sociability and modern guest expectations.
