AST Plastic Containers, a leading manufacturer of high-quality plastic containers based in North Wales, has announced it will be planting 250 trees in the Welsh countryside as part of an initiative by Carbon Footprint.

196 of the trees will be planted at Ysgol Maes y Mynydd in Wrexham, with 54 planted at Henllys Church Primary School in Cwmbran. In total, the trees will offset 250 tCO2e.

During 2020, AST Plastic Containers has introduced several initiatives in order to reduce its environmental impact. The company recently received a ‘Zero Waste to Landfill’ certification from Valpak, ensuring that none of its product waste is disposed of unsustainably. Earlier this year, it announced it had reduced its greenhouse gas emissions by 13% in two years by using 100% renewable sources, implementing an energy efficiency programme which included upgrading machinery, and optimising raw material usage.

The company also achieved ISO 14001 in 2019, an international standard for effective environmental management systems, ensuring that environmental sustainability is at the core of its operations.

Matthias Hochholzer, Managing Director of AST Plastic Containers in the UK, said: “Over the last fifty years, deforestation has increasingly become an environmental issue, with large areas of woodland and forest being cut down to create land for farming, as well as providing product such as paper, cardboard, rubber and paint.

“Planting 250 trees is just one of the ways in which we are trying to offset our carbon output, as well as contributing to the tree-planting initiative. We’re proud to be a forward-thinking, environmentally-conscious company that provides high-quality products too.”
