York business helps local SMEs get ahead of major employment rights updates

York-based HR consultancy McMillan & Associates is hosting a free event to help local business owners to prepare for significant reforms under the Employment Rights Act, as changes begin to take effect across the UK.

Led by HR specialist Siobhan Clarke, the event will take place at the McMillan & Associates Clifton Moor office on Wednesday 1 July as part of its programme of Clifton Moor Business Connect events. It will focus on what businesses need to do now to stay ahead of their changing employment obligations.

With some changes already in force, further measures are expected to follow through 2026 and 2027. The event will cover which changes are already in effect, what is coming next, and how businesses can prepare before further requirements are introduced.

Reforms include updates to statutory sick pay, family leave, workplace protections and flexible working. Further measures around zero-hours contracts, guaranteed hours, shift notice requirements and dismissal protections are also in the pipeline. Sectors such as hospitality and tourism businesses are expected to be among the sectors most affected, given their reliance on flexible and seasonal staffing.

The newly established Fair Work Agency, which launched earlier this year, is consolidating employment rights enforcement into a single body with a greater focus on compliance.

Siobhan Clarke says: “Some business owners may think that these reforms are something to deal with in the future, but several changes are already here, and others are moving quickly towards implementation. For SMEs, the act can have impact on their recruitment practice, policies, contracts and day-to-day operations.

“The introduction of the Fair Work Agency means employers can expect a much greater focus on compliance in the coming years. Businesses that educate themselves early and start planning now will be in a far stronger position than those forced to react later.

“There is also still an opportunity for SME leaders to have their say, which we urge York business owners to do. The Government is consulting on parts of the legislation, and businesses can engage with that process to ensure policymakers understand the practical realities facing smaller employers. If SMEs stay silent, there is a risk that decisions will be shaped without that perspective.”
