UK’s First Accredited Cake Business Course Launches To Help Bakers Turn Their Talent Into Profit
Sweet As Success founder Jenny Gilson launches an accredited business course created specifically for cake makers and bakers.
The UK’s first accredited business course created specifically for cake makers and bakers has now launched, with a mission to professionalise the industry and help talented creatives build profitable, sustainable businesses.
The Mentorship, created by cake business mentor and Sweet As Success founder Jenny Gilson, combines structured business education with personalised mentoring and practical implementation.
Rather than teaching people how to bake, the course focuses on something Jenny believes is too often overlooked within the industry, teaching talented bakers how to actually make money from their skills.
Covering pricing, profitability, sales, marketing, mindset, customer experience and business growth, the mentorship has been designed to help cake makers move beyond the ‘hobby baker’ mindset, stop undercharging and build commercially successful businesses that pay them properly.
Talking about the mentorship Jenny said: “There are some phenomenally talented people in the cake industry, but being able to create an incredible cake and knowing how to run a profitable business are two completely different skill sets.
“I see cake makers working incredibly long hours, producing amazing work and still not earning what they should be earning.
“It’s not because they aren’t talented enough. It’s because nobody has ever taught them the business side of baking, how to understand their numbers, price for profit, sell confidently and attract the right customers.
“Creating an accredited course specifically for our industry is about changing that. I want cake makers to recognise that what they are building is a real business and give them the knowledge, confidence and support to make it a successful one.”
Jenny brings more than 25 years of hands on cake making experience to the program.
Her own route into business was far from conventional. Her early career took her to Claridge’s in London, working in its kitchens and producing food for some of the world’s most famous guests. After becoming a mum and experiencing postnatal depression, Jenny decided to take a different direction. With her first child just one year old, she launched her own cake business from her kitchen table. Over the following years, that small business grew into a thriving company.
Jenny went on to operate two shops, employ a team, secure wholesale contracts and generate more than £2 million in cake sales before eventually selling the business.
Her career has also included winning Entrepreneur of the Year and Great Taste Awards, as well as some memorable cake commissions including baking the cakes for the first two series of Married at First Sight UK and creating the first wedding anniversary cake for King Charles III and Queen Camilla.
It was after experiencing almost every stage of building and growing a cake company herself that Jenny recognised a wider problem within the industry.
She saw talented bakers investing heavily in perfecting their creative skills, while often having little access to specialist education around the commercial skills needed to turn those talents into a sustainable income which lead to development of The Mentoriship, an accredited course that will change the industry for the better.
